  • Dr. Patricia Brooks

    Dr. Patricia Brooks HBSc, MSc, DDS, FRCD(C), Diplomate ABOMP, PhD

    Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine specialist in the Dental Oncology Clinic and lead of the HROL Clinic, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre

    Dr. Brooks is an Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine Consultant at the University Health Network. She sees patients within Princess Margaret Cancer Centre’s Head and Neck Cancer and Dental Oncology Clinics. Patricia was awarded her PhD in Molecular Biology at the University of Toronto in 2020. She completed her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree with distinction at the University of Western Ontario and her MSc at the University of Toronto also in molecular biology. Patricia also serves as the Education Director for the Department of Dental Oncology at Princess Margaret. She is currently undergoing Post-Doctoral Research studies within the Bratman lab (Princess Margaret Cancer Research Institute) investigating cell-free DNA in liquid biopsies for the early detection of oral cancer in high-risk patients.

    Dr. Erin Watson DMD, MHSc

    Dr. Watson is a Clinician Investigator at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, Canada, where acts as the Deputy Chief of Dentistry. She is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry at University of Toronto, Canada and co-chair of the Oral Care Study Group of the International Society of Oral Oncology. Dr. Watson graduated with the gold medal from the Faculty of Dentistry at McGill University, followed by a residency in Hospital Based Dentistry at Mount Sinai hospital in Toronto, as well as a Master’s in Health Administration at University of Toronto. Dr. Watson is a published author in peer-reviewed journals with a special interest in dental care for patients with acute leukemia and head and neck cancer, as well as the inequity experienced by cancer patients seeking dental care.

    Dr.  Krishnamoorthy obtained his BSc and DMD degrees at McGill University, AEGD at the University of Connecticut, and MSc in Oral Radiology at the University of Toronto. He currently works at the department of Dental Oncology and Maxillofacial Prosthetics at Princess Margaret Hospital and in private practice in Ontario.

    Dr. Michael Glogauer DDS PhD Dip Perio FCAHS

    Head of Dentistry for University Health Network, Chief of Dental Oncology and Maxillofacial Prosthetics at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre

    Dr. Glogauer is an internationally-recognized dentist (DDS, 1993), periodontist (PhD Dip Perio, 1999) and leader in the fields of dentistry, oral immunity, oral diseases and periodontology. He is a Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto (since 2002), Head of Dentistry for University Health Network, Chief of Dental Oncology and Maxillofacial Prosthetics at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and owner of OMGPerio, a periodontal and dental implant practice in Hamilton, Ontario. He has received awards for recognition of scientific excellence (Quality of Life research award from Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)-IMHA-2006) and has been continuously funded by CIHR since 1994. He has generated over 230 peer reviewed publications in the fields of dentistry, oral health and immunology and is a Fellow in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

Learning Objectives:

  • To educate dentists so they can be comfortable treating patients who have a history of cancer or are currently being treated for cancer
  • Gain an understanding of the role of the community dentist and the role of hospital-based dentists for these patients
  • Identify what questions/information to gain from patients about each major cancer type and how to modify their practice for these patients
  • How to identify clinical and radiographic changes associated with cancer progression and previous oncologic treatment
  • How to read routine bloodwork for oncologic patients to determine who is safe to treat
  • How to adjust dental management for oncologic patients within your clinic
